Historical research on the Holocaust has not dealt evenly with all the Jewish communities that were persecuted. The fate of the Jews in Belgium is one of those relatively neglected issues. Moreover, since what little has been published or has been written is in either Dutch or French, the material has been largely unavailable to readers outside Belgium.
This volume, Belgium and the Holocaust - Jews, Belgians, Germans, which contains the updated and annotated papers presented at a conference held at Bar-I1an University in 1989, is thus the first of its kind in English. A variety of researchers from Belgium, France, and Israel discuss issues such as the make-up of Belgium Jewry before the war; the Nazi anti-Jewish policies; the attitudes of various segments of Belgian society to the Jews before, during, and after the occupation; the Jewish strategies and activities for survival; the problematics of reconstruction in the aftermath of the war; the contacts with the Yishuv in Palestine; emigration to the United States; and the policies of postwar commemoration.
The unique Belgian perspective contributes to a better understanding of the West European scene during the Holocaust period and sheds new light on major issues of Holocaust research in general - including the conversion of hidden Jewish children by the Catholic Church, the role of the Jewish Councils, and the importance of the non-Jewish underground organizations.
Dan Michman, the editor of the volume, is professor of Modern Jewish History and currently holds the Abraham and Edita Spiegel Family Chair in Holocaust Research at Bar-I1an University. He has published extensively on issues of Holocaust historiography, Jewish religious life during the Holocaust, the Jewish Councils, Dutch Jewry, and post-Zionism.
מחקר היסטורי על השואה לא עסק באופן שווה עם כל הקהילות היהודיות שהיו נרדפים. גורלם של היהודים בבלגיה הוא אחד מאותם נושאים שהוזנחו. יתר על כן, מאז המעט שכבר פורסם או נכתב גם בהולנדית או צרפתית, החומר כבר במידה רבה הפך ללא זמין לקוראים מחוץ לבלגיה. כרך זה, בלגיה והשואה - היהודים, הבלגים, הגרמנים, אשר מכיל את המסמכים המעודכנים שהובא בכנס שנערך באוניברסיטת בר אילן בשנת, 1989 ולכן הוא הראשון מסוגו בשפה האנגלית. מגוון רחב של חוקרים מבלגיה, צרפת, ישראל דנים בנושאים כגון יצירת הקהילה היהודית בבלגיה לפני המלחמה; המדיניות האנטי יהודית של הנאצים; העמדות של מגזרים שונים בחברה הבלגית כלפי היהודים לפני, במהלך, ואחרי הכיבוש; האסטרטגיות היהודיות ופעילויות הישרדות; בעיתיות של שיקום בעקבות המלחמה: המגעים עם היישוב בארץ ישראל, הגירה לארצות הברית, והמדיניות של אחרי המלחמה, ההנצחה. נקודת המבט הייחודית הבלגית, תורמת טוב יותר להבנה של הסצנה במערב אירופה במהלך תקופת השואה ושופך אור חדש על הסוגיות העיקריות של השואה המחקר בכלל - כולל ההמרה דתית של ילדים יהודים מוסתרים על ידי הכנסייה הקתולית, תפקיד של מועצות היהודים, והחשיבות של ארגוני המחתרת הלא יהודית.
דן מכמן, עורך הכרך, הוא פרופסור להיסטוריה המודרנית של עם ישראל. כיום הוא הממונה על הקתדרה ע"ש משפחת אברהם ואדיתה שפיגל לחקר השואה באוניברסיטת בר אילן. הוא כתב ופרסם בהרחבה על בעיות של ההיסטוריוגרפיה של שואת היהודים הדתיים אשר חיו באותה תקופה. וכן על מועצות היהודים, ההולנדית והיהדות הפוסט ציונית.
